During the 2019 campaign for mayor of Memphis, I responded to public outcry over a caricature of the only woman candidate with an analysis. Memphis magazine initially stood by its depiction of Tami Saywer, calling in part of “a long-standing satirical tradition.” Two leading male candidates, however, were rendered more fully and, to many people, closer to the tradition of caricature.  The magazine was removed from shelves the same weekend the pushback, including this piece, surfaced.
